MONTHLY DINNER MEETING
Thursday, April 24, 2008

Crowne Plaza Hotel Uptown
201 S. McDowell Street
Charlotte, NC 28204

Guest Speaker:  Sheri Lynch
107.9 The Link
Bob & Sheri Morning Show
Sheri Lynch

SHERI LYNCH began her career in television, writing and producing paranoia-inducing news teases. Having tired of warning the world about the dangers lurking in dirty restaurant kitchens and sketchy daycare centers, she agreed to create a commercial for a new radio program. Enter Bob Lacey, wearing one of his favorite preppy outfits. "Lose the red sweater," she suggested. "You don't want to look like an elf, right?" To pay her back for that disrespect, Bob invited her to be his guest on-air. That was a meeting of soul mates, and the beginning of the long, happy Bob & Sheri partnership.

Sheri has been featured in numerous trade publications and has earned many professional honors. In 2002 and 2005, Sheri received the American Women in Radio and Television's (AWRT) highest honor, the Gracie Allen Award, in recognition of her outstanding achievement in the realistic portrayal of women in media. In 2004, Sheri won the Charlotte Business Journal's "Women in Business Achievement Award." She has been named Best Local Radio Personality by Creative Loafing magazine for over ten consecutive years. Bob & Sheri has also received six nominations for the radio industry's highest honor, the Marconi Award, presented by the National Association of Broadcasters.

Sheri's best-selling first book, Hello, My Name is Mommy (St. Martins Press), is currently in its fourth printing. Her second book, Be Happy, Or I'll Scream!, was released by St. Martins Press in late February 2006. Sheri is married, with two young daughters and a step -- or, as she prefers, bonus son.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Rob Miller Individual
      Rob Miller

Dear NARI Members:

The last few months have been a great start to a bright future.  Our biggest challenge facing us right now is remembering and honoring the groundwork we have laid out thus far.  If we stay focused, and avoid projects that do not directly relate to our long term goals, will achieve success more quickly and completely.

This month I will share some brain food that you could reflect on as it might apply
to your careers as well as NARI.

THE USERS AND THE HELPERS
The key here is not in the lesson itself (we all know this already).  The key is to hone your skills to recognize how, it's going to play out within yourself and the other party.

The helper relationship is basically good, sound, and long lasting.  The User relationship, takes unfair advantage of one party, and is typically a short term affair, and definitely not a recipe for true and complete success.  How might this apply?  Let's use a bit of exaggeration to make the point:

If you are a remodeler, and you were talking to a prospective client.  How far would you get if you said that all you really cared about was getting the job for the largest profit, doing the job with the least expensive materials and your design, and getting finished and paid as quickly as possible?

If you are selling a service or some building materials, it's the same story.
It's no different when you are talking to a perspective or current NARI member, the issue stays the same, remember, involved can be as simple as attending a meeting.
Perhaps a litmus test

One more tidbit to ponder:
Most everyone is familiar with the popular phrase; "The squeaky wheel get's the grease."  I read a variation of that some years ago, that I believe evokes some deeper thought and reflection:  Sometimes the squeaky wheel get's replaced.

Warmest Regards,

Rob Miller Signature

According to Josh Garskof in his recent article in the April 2008 Issue of Money Magazine one upside of the popped real estate bubble is that hiring contractors has suddenly become a lot easier.

He recommends a green light to homeowners if your contractor
    1) has a good rep in the industry.
    2) his business card includes a local address
    3) his list of references is a mile long

    He recommends a yellow light
    1) he drives a rusted out jalopy
    2) he wants cash
    3) he doesn't provide a cell number

    He recommends a red light
    1) he wants to skip the permit or have homeowner apply for it.
    2) he solicits the business next door
    3) he seems sleezy

Josh recommends homeowners ask the following three questions when checking out references:

    1)  How has the work held up over time?
    2)  Was the contractor easy to reach?
    3)  Did he run into problems and how were they resolved?

For more details go to the April 2008 issue of Money Magazine

We expect all NARI members to have a green light!
