PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear NARI Members:
How I got here and what I'm going to do about it
Welcome all to 2008! There is a lot to be thankful for and to be excited about. I am personally excited and deeply energized to be your new NARI President for 2008. I started this journey about eight years ago when my good friend and loyal customer, Harry Stroud invited me to attend a meeting as his guest. I can still remember Ray Terry standing up and talking with such energy that night some eight years ago. Inspired, (Thank You Ray) I found my way over to the NARI office one day back when it was located behind Barry Klemons' Archadeck office. While there, I introduced myself and said, "I wanna get involved!" It never occurred to me to only join NARI. To make a long story less long, I served on a few committees for a few years until another good friend and loyal customer and past president and other things that will get me in trouble - called me. Yes, good ol' Joe Balich 'how'd you like to serve on the board?" he went on - kind of like my wife saying "how about we have some kids". If I only knew then - I'd still do it.
So, how NARI works (so, y'all know): committee to board to exec board to me sitting here writing the presidents letter, and sending my oldest off to kindergarten at Selwyn in the middle of the night so he can get two miles down the road in an hour and a half on a CMS bus.
So, what the heck do we do now? Lucky for me and NARI, we have a plan. Please turn to page five of the Fall 2007 directory at this time. Right next to the New Dominion Bank Ad you will see Our Mission. That will be our task, our focus. I believe our country should be following our Founding Fathers' document, just as NARI should continue on with its original spirit. That is exactly what we decided. So who are we? And when did we decide this? We is us, but we is guided and directed by the president and the board.
If you look at the Executive Board, (page six) typically those are the future NARI presidents for the years to come. This brings me, in a convoluted way to (finally) the point. I am old enough to know that you can't build a solid business in only one year, or develop a product to its fullest sales potential in only one year. Add to that, changing the business model or product design every year, because the leader changes and you make less progress. It's nobody's fault, the odds are just stacked against it.
Somewhere in the fourth quarter of 2007, in preparation for the year to come, I had a novel idea: What if we put all the probable future presidents for the next five years in one room, and see if we can agree on a long term focus? A legacy. A united goal if you will. Let's bring the membership things like: POWER- VALUE- SIGNIFICANCE.
We went round and round for hours, and I went in there thinking it was OK if we left and did not agree on ONE focus. I encourage dissent, because sometimes it brings a lesson. I'd be happy at least that we tried to agree. We exceeded even my own view from my well worn rose colored spectacles. We actually agreed on a single focus for the next five years. I warn you all that there will be sacrifice. We can only go to one destination. Some destinations will have to wait. It's like a big family who wants to see America. We are a modest family and only have enough gas and money to go to one place at a time so we must agree and choose our journey, or we stay home and shop frivolously at Wal-Mart twenty bucks at a time. We decide to visit the Statue of Liberty, the Lincoln memorial, a noble destination-some might say will have to wait. Unneeded trips to Wal-Mart come to a close.
But, I trust, we will not only arrive at the destination of our focus, but we will be rewarded for the sacrifice. It will be worth it, because some day, five NARI members will get job contracts before the non member gets one in Charlotte. You will not sell a building material widget in Charlotte if you are not in NARI. It will be that important. You think I'm dreaming? You will be Coke, not RC. You will be Band Aid, not some off-brand that may or may not stick in they eyes of the consumer. You will be BMW, not Yugo. Think people will pay more for you? Think they will feel better about buying you than the others. It's nothing new, only for us. Now we must do our part. Find out about our part at the next NARI meeting.
If you would like to hear the un-edited, live version of this remarkable journey, please come to the next NARI meeting on January 31st at the Crowne Plaza Uptown Hotel. It is my plan that each month's president's letter will be repeated-live at the meeting. In fraternities it's called a broken record, in marketing class its called repetition. It's all part of the journey.
Join NARI if you have not already. Get involved if you have not already. Be part of the POWER and the VALUE and the SIGNIFICANCE that membership will bring to you, your business, and your life in the bright and shiny future we all have together.
Warmest Regards,
Rob Miller |
